My dear Clement Reid

I leave midday on Friday for Switzerland with Mr. Mitten. If you can come tomorrow (Thursday) evening & stay the night I shall be much pleased. If not, can you inform me on two points. (1) Is there on the train from Brussels to Bale any lavatory carriage, like those on the Midland trains to the North, to which access can be had either during short stoppages or by payment of a fee[?] (2) On the return journey, can a [2] berth in a sleeping carriage be obtained from Bale to Brussels? or are there any sleeping carriages? I should much prefer paying for one than breaking the journey (as my wife & her sister did) as that makes it 3 days travelling & 2 nights to do much good.

Neither the Guide Books nor the Swiss "Guide des Yoyageurs" give this information.

I am glad you found something new in Ireland. Many thanks for the Pinguicula which I arrived in excellent condition.

In haste, as I am busy [3] with endless preparations.

Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
