Enclosure (WCP665.837)

[1]

Soon I found myself at Newcastle & here Mr Wallace took hold of me & conveying me to the Eastern Archipelago bid me notice how as we passed through the islands of Sumatra Java & Borneo & Java[.]

The Fauna shewed1 but ordinary changes commensurate with the distance we had passed, but then taking me to the Eastern Cliffs Shores of Bali, he pointed out that in the next island separated only by a distance of 15 miles, but by a deeper sea than those between the previous islands we had passed, the Fauna underwent a total change — that in short[,] we were in one Continent so to speak & that at in Lombock [Lombok] began the great Continent of Australia.
