August 11th 1879.

Dear Mr Stainton

Can you oblige me by informing me how many species of Lepidoptera are peculiar to the British Isles? If they are not very numerous could you oblige me by a list of them, indicating those which are representative forms of Continental species, & therefore likely to be peculiar whether classed as species or varieties, and those which are recent discoveries here & may very likely also occur on the Continent when searched for.

If you can refer me to any [2] book where this information is given it will answer my purpose as well.

Believe me | Yours very faithfully | Alfred R Wallace [signature]

H.T.Stainton Esq

P.S. If they are numerous the number of species (approximately) in each family or genus will answer my purpose.

A.R.W.
