Letter (WCP678.850)

[1]

A. R. Wallace, Esq1

Mountsfield,

Lewisham,

S.E.

November 4th 1879

My dear Wallace,

As I can answer your letter much more satisfactorily viva voce than by any written document, I would suggest that you should take a Mid Kent Train2 from the Addiscombe Road Station3 to Catford Bridge4— & come here. I shall be at [one word crossed out] leisure on Friday next & should be very glad to see you any time after 10 a.m.

There is a train [that] leaves Addiscombe Road at 9.40, which gets to Catford Bridge [2] at 10 & a train from Addiscombe Road at 10.27 which reaches Catford Bridge at 10.38.

This house is about 1 miles[sic] from Catford Bridge.5

This letter bears three blue stamps on page 1, two reading "Entomology | BMNH | Library" and one reading "Mountsfield, Lewisham, S.C." indicating the letter’s origin.
The Mid-Kent Line railway was opened in 1857 by the South Eastern Railway company.
Addiscombe Road Station was a terminal station of the Mid-Kent Line railway in the Addiscombe district. It was renamed simply "Addiscombe" in 1926, and its last train ran in May 1997.
Catford Bridge Station is a station on the Mid-Kent Line railway. Still in operation, it lies between the Ladywell and Lower Sydenham stations.
While clearly addressed to Wallace, this letter lacks any valedictions or signature.
