Letter (WCP6788.7859)

[1]

Oxford:

March 29. 1892.

Many thanks for your letter and photograph. I had intended to insert it, (with your permission) together with those of Darwin, Wallace, & Weismann, in my [illeg.] book. But Wallace answers he is "surprised" I should have asked him, and "begs to decline the honour". Therefore I will not now include yours, because its introduction would thus be out of balance. Weismann's has been already [illeg.] in 4,000 copies, so that will constitute a frontispiece of Vol. ii, as a reproduction of Darwin's Nature portrait will of Vol. i. The latter vol. is now ready for publication in England, and is only waiting for American & Foreign editions. So in a few weeks I shall be able to send you a copy; and will send you my own photo inside.

It appears to me best to say nothing about Moulton's objection to your [illeg.] as it is clearly founded on a misunderstanding.

G.J.R.
