2. Termites[?] — [one word illeg.]

"scarcely classed as two ants" implies that they have some affinity to ants.

6. "which the warm currents from the tropics sustain in abundance" — implies that the artic water is actually warm, whereas it is always close to the freezing[?] point; — we doubt there is a good deal of heat in it, — other warmth of the tropics protects[?] just from becoming too cold.

7. [One word illeg.] — little surplus after producing new individuals — is it not rather after supporting in scarcity? Is there any proof that [one word illeg.] actually bred less [one word illeg.] the [one word illeg.] of warmer countries?

7. Mexico & Peru — both regions: civilisation arose on high temperate plateaux but the uniformity of the climate & absence of water perhaps anticipated for it.

7. Reaction against such[?] resistances — of climate etc, induced by reaction and adaptations, the energy required and acts to welcome the leaf[?] to advance in other directions.

12. Plums, chestnuts[?] — no indigineous plants at all allied to our plums and chestnuts[?] inhabit the Pacific islands.

13. ? [one word illeg.] horses, camels — before oxen, sheep, goats.
