Dear Mr. Wallace,

Whitely who travelled for Salvin & my-self for many years in Ecuador & Peru finally went to British Guiana, from whence he sent us large collections of birds & some new lepidoptera, but he did not touch beetles, nor do I know that there has been any serious collection of [2] Coleoptera in that country. Whitely went a long way into the interior of the country & must have been there for 5 or 6 years & died there some 7 years ago.

It was not a collection of small things. I have no doubt there is still much to be done there. I do not think very much is to be done in British Honduras. The fauna is a continuation of that of Yucatan & Guatemala [3]

We have received a good many collections from a Mr. Thaneaseus who has lived there for some years & is I believe in the mahogany trade & lives in the interior of the country. I think British Guiana would be a far more profitable country & is easy of access for a long way inland now.

As regards private collectors who would advance money for the purpose, I know of no one but [4] Walter Rothschild & he does a good deal in this way. If you like I would write to him about it or put you into communication with him.

Believe me | Sincerely Y[ou]rs | J. D. Godman [signature]
