Dear Mr. Slater
Please send me, without further delay, all the books & papers of Spruce you have on hand, or I may be doing work twice over unnecessarily.
In yours of last Monday, you tell me you have a volume containing "the Journal up the Rio Negro, to San Carlos, & San Gabriel <in?> 1852 and 1854."
But 2 months or more ago you sent me the rough original "Journal" of this very part, which I am now laboriously going over & copying out. If the other one is written out by [2] Spruce himself, it will supersede that which I have. So please send it at once, by itself, to save time, & thereof everything else you have, to follow as soon as possible.
I cannot understand why this very important journal, was not sent me before. This is the first time you have mentioned it.
Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
P.S. I have now a lady copying the letters at Kew — but if this portion of the Rio Negro "Journals" [3] have [sic] been worked up by Spruce a good many of these letters will not be wanted. | A.R.W.
