Dear Mr. Slater
I am glad to hear you have the big book on Cinchona Introduction, with Spruce's Report. Will you be so good as to cut out "Spruce's Report" for me — or if you prefer it send me the whole book, & I will cut out what I want. As I have all the separate papers of Spruce on this subject in bound vol. of "Opuscula", this big volume will be of little interest to anybody.
I have several of Spruce's [2] botanical papers, which he gave me, and I really think I shall now have all the materials I can make use of.
After getting them all roughly arranged in "Chapters" which I shall now soon complete — there will come the very laborious job of reading over the whole from the very beginning & deciding what to omit [3] altogether, what to condense & what to retain. Then there will come the getting of some suitable illustrations & Maps, beside those of Spruce already available.
Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
P.S. I had not seen Spruce's Story in the Leader. I suppose it is a polit. satire, & will not do for the book.
