Dear Mr. Slater
I was very glad to get the drawings & that one was finished:— It gives an excellent idea of what the mountains round Tarapoto are like. The other 3, are so carefully outlined that I am getting an artist (drawing master) here to try at finishing them in nearly the same style, which he is sure [2] he can do. They will then, form 4 good whole-page illustrations for the "Tarapoto" chapter, for which I could get nothing whatever, as it seems quite out of the track of S. American travellers.
He evidently took great pains with these drawings.
In his chapter on the "Trombelas" river, Spruce likens a wild fruit to the "Wheatplum", as [3] if that were a well known fruit. I can find no such name in any gardening book I have, nor in Hogg's "Fruit Manual". It is I suppose a Yorkshire local name. Can you tell me what it is?
Mr. Stabler has gone over the whole of his letters from Spruce & sent me extracts, whenever he thought they might be useful. Some are very interesting.1
Did he (Stabler) succeed the elder Spruce as schoolmaster at [4] Webburn?
Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
P.S. The tracing of Map you sent is no use. It was evidently the old Spanish Map Spruce traced & drew for his paper on the "Llanjanate Mtns & The Treasure of the Incas" for the R. Geog. Socy They had the Map reduced & lithographed and I am having it further reduced and copied for the book, to illustrate what I print of that paper which is most interesting. | A.R.W.
