Dear Sir

Many thanks for the trouble you have taken to send me notes of errata & obscurities which will be very useful to me in preparing a future edition.

In several cases however I see no need for altering the text as it stands. Thus p. III as to the [1 word illeg.]; the context shows clearly what is meant, and the[1 word illeg.] & Coal [1 word illeg.] were facts in distinct genera by Bonaparte & several other[1 word illeg.] ornithologists implying that there are structural differences.

p. 116 Undoubtedly the [1 word illeg.] & cassowaries are degenerate types, but also low - I know of none ever.

p. 117 I did wish instead to coordinate the birds named, as by the "VC" shows..

p. 154 A mere verbal alteration will suffice here, as were if your list of species which [2] "have [1 word illeg.]" were much larger it would not affect the argument, which depends on the contrast between one set of species which breed asconstantly as when wild, another set which breed [1 word illeg.] at all a [1 word illeg.]. I will add a note referring to Darwins details in "Domesticated [1 word illeg.]"

p.159 As to the [1 word illeg.]x I follow Darwin, who decided after careful [1 word illeg.], that the two species are very distinct.

p.288 The descriptions of the linneteggs are in Darwins own words. Ref [1 word illeg.]iv.

p.213 Wren & willowwarbler quoted fromC. Dixon are from our best field ornithologists in [3 words illeg.] p. xxiv

The Jackdaw, Redstart [1 word illeg.] do not belong to groups which nest in holes [1 word illeg.]

As to the absence of mammals in N.Z. I have been so accustomed to leave bats & aquatics out of consideration that I forgot to say so. Thanks

(3) for calling my attention to it.

In my "Island Life" I had discussed this question fully, & forgot that readers of "Darwinism" could not be supposed to have read that work.

Yours very faithfully

P.S. Any other errata or [1 word illeg.] you may need with I shall be very glad of.
