Letter (WCP7032.8144)

[1]

Broadstone, Wimborne

Novr 22nd 1904

Dear Miss Garnett

I shall [ms torn — be] glad if you will begin copying Dr Spenser's letters at Kew, at once. Those I wish copied first, are -

12 letters to Mr. G. Beuthanus dated from Barra do Rio Negro 1851 to Jan. 1855

3 " to Mr. J. Smith of Kew 1851 to 1855

1 " to Sir William Hooker 1851 Feb. to Jan. 28 1855

These all relate to the Rio Negro, & Venezuela voyage — which I have to work in with a rough "Journal" during the same period. [2]

Afterwards the letters from Ecuador & Peru (57 in number) may be done.

Your writing is quite clear & will do well.

They must be written on [1 word illeg.] paper as they are to be printed from; and written on the lines, as no alterations will be needed except perhaps omissions. See that the ink will try black to facilitate reading at night.

The headings may be put simply

"To Sir W. Hooker" &c. (Place and date) [in one line]

"Dear Sir" and "Yours Truly" &c. may be omitted.

Each letter must be on seperate pages of the Mss. that in — [3] — always begin a letter on a fresh page.

I conclude a [1 word illeg.] to Mr. Heusley who will be [1 word illeg.] with you for the work. As I understand you have a brother at Kew I dare say you know him.

Yours very truly

[signature] Alfred R. Wallace

P.S. Of course you will write all botanical and local names with special distinctness to minimise printers' errors. The the Letter with you to avoid mistakes.

A.R.W.
