My dear Fred

I am glad you have got so excellent a passage & so cheap. But you do not give me <a> date of sailing. I now send you the proofs of my mysterious article Mr. Kirby mentioned to you. Please return when read. Writing it interested me greatly. You gun will be a very useful size, but I do not think you will have any use for it in Trinidad and not much in Guiana, as all your time will be needed for insects, shells, & mammals.

I was glad to hear f<rom?> [2] your penultimate letter that you have a sweetheart. I congratulate you!!! It will no doubt sweeten your solitude and induce you to work hard (though that perhaps will be dangerous!) and make you look out for some attractive spot in the South American forest to settle in & devote yourself to the study of its inexhaustible natural products.
