Letter (WCP7131.8258)

[1]

Waldron Edge, Duppas Hill,

Croydon.

Sept. 23rd. 1878

Dear Mr. Mongredien

I was in a remote part of Sussex when your letter reached me,1 & could not get back to Town by 12 on Monday (today). But there is no immediate hurry, and if Mr. Coventry2 will be at home early next week it would do as well.

My Eucalyptus at Grays is the same species you have at Forest Row[.] I think you said it was named at Kew E. polyanthemos, but I have [2] had the seed under the name of E. urnigera or E. obliqua.

I have this morning seen at a nusery at Pilt Down near Uckfield, the largest Aurucaria I have ever seen, 50 feet high[,] 37 years old, and an avenue of about 100 trees all about 40 feet high and very finely grown.

Either Monday or Tuesday next week I would be most happy to meet Mr. Coventry & yourself. On Wednesday I have to go to Cardiff to lecture.

Your very faithfully | Alfred R Wallace [signature]
