My dear Mr Wallace
I was very pleased to get you letter,1 and have duly thanked the senders of the book referred to. My circle of English friends is narrowing. Darwin2, Huxley3, Bates4 and many more have gone since I was last in England—
I will send you the seeds you wish to have as soon as they are ripe and will write again on some scientific matters. Meanwhile I must ask you a favour: I have been recently appointed by the Chilean Government to attend to fishery matters. Part of my duty is the introduction of salmon and some other fishes. Could you kindly send me the priced catalogues of some dealers in fish eggs?
I should also like to enter into communication with some of the people who carry on the fishery work of (another departed) Frank Buckland5 at South Kensington[.] Excuse this short note and the trouble I give you & believe me
Yours truly6
