Dear Sir
Many thanks for your kind letter received a month ago, of the high opinion you express of my "Island Life" and other works. You will have seen that I replied to Professor Houghton, who from his silence since I presume has not yet digested my arguments He is a clever man & learned but very hasty in his conclusions.
I dont think I received the pamphlet you mention about the Moa. It is a subject of great [2] interest and I shall be glad of a copy.
I shall very much like to read the parts of Yorkshire in which you live and especially want to see Teesdale and the [1 word illeg.] in its natural habitat but I fear I shall not be able to come this year as in March I am going to move to Godalming where I am having a little cottage built and hope to spend the rest of my days in the enjoyment of nature and the cultivation of a garden, which is my chief delight.
Wishing you the complements of the season
Believe me | yours very faithfully
