Sunday Evening, <21 November>2 1886
My dear Dr. Carter3
When I wanted to eat the pears at lunch which your daughter so kindly provided for me, I discovered that I had left my knife at your house – a three-bladed white-handled knife. If found perhaps you will be so good as to post it me here.
With best remembrances to Mrs. & Miss Cater and thanks for your kind hospitality which made my visit to Williamstown an exceptionally agreeable one[.]
Believe me, yours faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
I4 enclose a carte in order that you may remember me till next Summer[.]
According to ARW’s North American journal (WCP5794), he visited Carter on Friday 19 November 1886.
