Henry Garnett2 Esq
Dear Sir
As you kindly promise to look over my MSS,3 I send you that of Chap. VI – (very largely new).
In reading it please bear in mind (1) That it is written solely for the “general reader”. (2) That the plan of the book deals only with new departures in science, and only admits such a brief sketch, or reference to, elementary science as to render these “new departures” intelligible. (3) That where a science has almost grown up [2] during the Century – as in Chemistry Electricity &c, no reference can be made to any but a few salient points of popular interest.
Please note on the margin in pencil by a x. or by (1) (2) &c.. any p passages you think erroneous or insufficient, and explain in what way, by separate notes, with suggestions.
I will send you only one chapter at a time, and you can look it over when convenient, as I shall not be ready to go to press for some months; having new chapters on [3] Electricity & several on Astronomy yet to write.
yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
P.S. I propose to illustrate the new ed. & shall be glad of references to any cuts you know of that will be useful, & the use if which can probably be had.
A. R. W.
