Dear Dr Wallace

I have just returned home from a brief holiday, and find your letter which has been forwarded to me from "Knowledge" office, awaiting me.

The extremities of the major axis of the egg-shaped cluster, which Mr Lewis finds indicated by the double stars, lie as follows:__ 1

(1) R. A. 19 hrs 30 min. North Dec[ember] 10º

(2) R. A. 7 hrs 30 min, South Dec[ember] 10º

The want of any systematic survey of double stars in the southern hemisphere, comparable with Struve's2 in the northern, renders it impossible to determine these points with any great precision. Mr Lewis estimates the earth to be roughly about three times as far from the second extremity of the axis, as from the first.

I hope that this is the information you wish

Believe me/yours very truly | E. Walter Maunder [signature]

Dr Alfred R. Wallace. F. R. S.

Letter contains annotated writing by Maunder that states: "N. Pole of Galaxy. H.M. 12.40. 27 º.30'"
von Struve, Friedrich Georg Wilhelm. (1793-1864). German Astronomer.
