My dear Sir¹

Your letter to the Daily news was much too general for them to insert, but I don’t suppose that under any circumstances would they admit a purely personal attack except in reference to some matter quite fresh in the public mind. Neither would any scientific journal do so, except in reference to some new book or lecture of D^r. C’s². There is however no difficulty in bringing the matter before the public, by means of a pamphlet, containing the facts carefully arranged and [2] with exact quotations & references, and you might very well include D^r. C’s totally unfounded personal accusations against Mr. Crookes³ which were so crushingly replied to by that gentleman in the Quarterly Journal of Science.

Such a pamphlet if carefully written, & avoiding personal abuse, would I have no doubt be well noticed by the press, & I think welcomed by many scientific men, to whom D^r. C’s. "little ways" [3] are well known. The pamphlet should be brought out handsomely, & be of an historical nature, & you must get a good publisher, & then I do not see why it should not pay for itself & perhaps leave a profit.

As you seem to feel so strongly on this question, why do you not adopt this course? If I can be of any use to you I shall be most happy.
