Dear Sir
I am preparing a volume on "The World of Life" treated from a somewhat novel point of view. I write to ask you if I can have permission to use some of the blocks and plates in the your Guide Books, to "Fossil Reptile Amphibians and Amphibians Fishes — and to Elephants Recent & Fossil. Of the "Reptiles" [2] I should like to have about 12 to 20 — & of the Mammals &c. perhaps a dozen.
I shall not want them for some months yet perhaps, but wish to know if I can have them, as otherwise I shall have to seek others that are suitable. My publishers are Messrs Chapman & Hall, who will apply for copies of the Plates if permission can be given to use them.
I apply to you because they are in your department, but if it necessary for me or my [3] publishers to apply to the "Director" or to the "Trustees", I shall be obliged if you will inform me.
Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
P. S. I was greatly interested in your admirable address to the British Association lasy year.
