Accepts CD’s proposal for new revised edition of Origin; will pay $50 [dollars or pounds!?] for casts of the plates and pay CD on sales.
Appleton edition of CD’s Journal of researches [1871] still selling well.
Also wants plates sent with CD’s new work on Expression. CD should arrange this with Murray’s.
Enclosed account has had charged against it difference in costs between type composition in the U. S. and securing stereotype plates from Murray. CD should insist on securing plates from the London publisher of all future books, otherwise Appleton unable to pay 10% of gross price.

Is satisfied with CD’s arrangement with Murray for Appleton’s to pay $50 [pounds or dollars!?] for stereo plates and clichés of 21 woodblocks for CD’s new book [Expression, see 8217]. Has ordered 5000 sets of plate impressions from Robert Cooke at Murray’s.

Accepts CD’s suggestion of new edition of Descent, and asks that Murray supply the stereotype plates and woodcuts for $50 [dollars or pounds!?], as soon as possible; supply of copies of Descent is exhausted.
Will publish CD’s proposed book [Insectivorous plants (1875)] on same terms as other works.

Wants to publish Variation and so will approach Judd & Co. [publishers of first U. S. edition (1868)].
Has secured rights to Variation from Judd & Co.; had to pay $350 [dollars or pounds!?] for old plates and promise 50% discount on 150 copies of the new edition. Hopes Murray’s charge for plates of new edition will not exceed cost of doing the work in the U. S. Judd lost out considerably from small sale of his edition.
Can cut the electros from the plates of the illustrations for the new edition of Variation if they are the same as in the first edition.
Has received plates for Climbing plants and will print immediately.
