The booksellers and publishers Williams & Norgate specialised in foreign scientific literature. The references are to Hermann Settegast and Settegast 1868, John James Audubon and Audubon 1831–[9], and Thomas Claverhill Jerdon and Jerdon 1862–4. Audubon 1831–[9] and Jerdon 1862–4 are cited frequently in Descent. There is an annotated copy of Audubon 1831–[9] in the Darwin Library–CUL (see Marginalia 1: 21–3), and a lightly annotated copy of Settegast 1868 in the Darwin Libary–Down (see Marginalia 1: 754).
