To J. J. Moulinié   7 March [1871]1

Down, Beckenham | Kent

March 7th

My dear Sir

I am astonished & much pleased to hear that you have finished the Translation.2 You must have worked very hard & I heartily congratulate you that your labour is over.— I shall be delighted if it can be published soon in Paris, which I by no means expected. I enclose Proof of end of Index.—3 The book has sold largely in England & I have not as yet been much abroad—4

In Haste | yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from J. J. Moulinié, 3 March 1871.
See letter from J. J. Moulinié, 3 March 1871. The reference is to Descent, which Moulinié translated into French (Moulinié trans. 1872).
The first printing of 2500 copies of Descent sold out within a week of its release (see letter from John Murray, 27 February [1871]).
