Faraday to Edmund Belfour   23 January 1840

Royal Institution | 23 Jany 1840

Sir

I beg the favour of you to express to the President & Vice-Presidents of the Royal College of Surgeons my most sincere thanks for the high honor of the invitation with which I have been favoured1. I shall not be able to accept it on the one hand because it is quite necessary that I lead a quiet life and on the other because the day is one of the Friday devoted to the service of the Royal Institution. But that circumstance does not at all diminish my thankfulness for the favour[.]

I have the honor to be | Sir | Your Obedient humble Servant | M. Faraday

Edmd Belfour Esq | &c &c &c

Presumably to attend the College’s Hunterian Oration and Dinner. For a similar refusal see Faraday to Belfour, 15 January 1848, letter 2047, volume 2.
