My dear Sir

I cannot let your kind letter pass unacknowledged for every good wish is very grateful to me. I had no idea of the honor until Dumas wrote me a few lines saying I was on the second line1 & thus I had no thoughts of that being changed to the first place until he again wrote to me from the voting chamber on the instant of decision2[.]
