Faraday to James Timmins Chance   7 November 1860

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 7 Novr. 1860

My dear Sir

Your notes are always very acceptable1 and your hints & suggestions too.

I suppose when you return from Whitby you will put up an experimental lens panel. I must, under the circumstances, meddle with the matter; else I feel I should willingly leave all to you;- but I suppose the pronoun we will best serve our purpose, unless you object.

I feel much uncertainty whilst endeavo[u]ring to decide by theory & diagrams (without experiment) upon the points (foci) for the lenticular band. On the other side I send my present impressions but expect that you have obtained some better results and with a more definite correction. When we come to an experimental trial for the purpose of deciding for the Smalls, I shall hope to have both the experimental panel, and another as now adjusted, up on the frame at once: so that we can turn first the light of one & then of the other on to the same white surface or screen; that we may be able to judge of the amount & position in both cases. The difference between a high & a low flame is also much on my mind; especially as we are so frequently liable to the latter unawares[.]

When you set about the matter I should like if you could let me know several days before hand when you might want me down; that I might arrange things here[.]

Ever Truly Yours | M. Faraday
