James Timmins Chance to Faraday   12 December 1860

Hamstead Birmingham | Dec.12. 1860

My dear Sir,

Please to fix your latest time, January 10th, for your examination of the ‘Smalls’ Light1.

This postponement of your coming will not at all delay the time of sending the apparatus to its destination, because after it is finished a fortnight at least must be allowed for the drying of the putty before its removal.

The novel process of lens-adjustment has caused an unexpected delay, notwithstanding that every exertion has been used to hasten the completion of the apparatus, since the receipt (last Thursday2) of the official authority to proceed.

As any error in diminishing the breadth of the ribs would render the ribs themselves valueless, great caution is requisite in carrying the new plan into effect, until the workmen have been thoroughly initiated.

Nothing can, of course, can be done to the reflectors, until a lenticular panel is in its place; & this involves time for the drying of the putty.

I consider that all will be finished in a fortnight hence, for certain.

I had determined to try the best position of the flame for the concentric lenticular panel: therefore, no expense will be incurred by your making the observations. It is very important to [word illegible] this remaining question[.]

Ever truly yours | J.T. Chance

Profr. Faraday &c &c

That is 6 December 1860.
