Faraday to Jabez Hogg1   18 November 1861

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 18 Novr. 1861

Dear Sir

I regret that I cannot comply with your request. I have not a high sense of the value of testimonials and my means are so limited that what I can spare I feel called upon to send in other directions[.]2

Very Truly Yours | M. Faraday

Jabez Hogg Esqr | &c &c &c

Jabez Hogg (1817–1899, ODNB). Journalist and ophthalmologist.
This was a testimonial for the family of the microscopist and histologist John Thomas Quekett (1815–1861, ODNB) who had died on 20 August 1861. See Darwin to Beale, 26 October 1861, Burkhardt et al.(1985–2010), 9: 321-2 which expressed a similar sentiment. See also letter 4295.
