Faraday to James Timmins Chance   17 February 1862

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 17 Feby 1862

My dear Mr Chance

I have received your paper & note1[.]

I have introduced all your additions & changes[.]

I have sent it to the Deputy Master2 to see if there is any wish to make further alterations or any objection to what has been changed or added - and I have asked for a couple of revises that we may each have one. I tried to make a reference in No. 11 not merely to the middle ray of the bundle passing through a given prism and its passage to the destined focus: but to the whole of the bundle that its focus should not be too far before or behind that of the middle ray. Perhaps you think that great exactness in this respect should not be required at present[.]

Ever Truly Yours | M. Faraday

I think you have said quite enough on the above point | MF

In the part proposed to be inserted in the 7th division it says “& in each alternate one of these panels an inclined stay is to be added.” I understand you to mean, of these upper panels[.]

Looking at the drawing;- What is an upper panel? Are there eight? Where is the inclined stay to go, in the alternate panels?- and how can they all coincide optically with the standards of the lanthorn[.]

Can the drawing go with the amended specification3?

Perhaps the tracing you promised me will inform me on these points[.]

Ever Yours | M. Faraday

William Pigott.
