Eccomi qui in uno sterpeto, debole come l’acqua, ed assolutamente impotente a tenervi testa. La vostra energia mi stordisce, ed è inutile che veniate a dirmi che siete lasso e infermo, mentre date tali prove in contrario. Possa trascorrere lungo tempo prima che proviate che cosa sia realmente lassitudine e depressione di forze, come è lo stato mio! Ma pure, benediciamo l’uno e l’altro la Provvidenza.

TRANSLATION

Here I am in a torpor, weak as water and absolutely unable to hold my head up. Your energy stupefies me, and it is useless to come to tell me that you are weak and infirm, whilst you give so many proofs to the contrary. Much time may go by before you experience what lassitude and the depression of strength really are, as is my state! But nevertheless, let us both, you and I, bless Providence.
