[Board of Trade embossed heading] | March 30.
My dear Mrs. Faraday:
I have not hitherto answered your note1 for it was necessary to consult the Trinity House & others before replying to it. Having done so we find that everyone is agreed that the small salary Professor Faraday has received should be continued to him.
As regards himself and his services both yourself and he may, I am sure, scrupulous as both are, be perfectly satisfied. What he has done for the Public Service if measured in money according to the rates usually paid, would have been remunerated by many times as much as has actually been paid to him: and what is now paid may be looked on as a very moderate pension for past services.
As regards Professor Tyndall you may also be perfectly satisfied: for he is to do the work under an arrangement which is, I hope, satisfactory to himself, and which is in no way dependent on what is paid to your husband.
Both the Trinity House and the Board of Trade are anxious that your husbands name should remain connected with the Public Service they have to do as long as possible. And I speak the feeling of all concerned when I say that we earnestly hope you will allow things to remain as they are.
Believe me | My dear Mrs. Faraday | Yours very truly | (signed) T.H. Farrer
