Sarah Faraday to Thomas Henry Farrer   19 March 1867

[Royal Institution embossed letterhead] | 21 Albemarle St. | March 19th 1867

Dear Sir

On Saturday night1 we received from the Board of Trade a Bill for £100 which purported to be due to Mr. Faraday for services rendered. Tho’ feeling rather unwilling to take the years salary seeing that my dear husband has been so unable to fulfil the duties, we accept it being fully sensible of the liberal spirit in which it is offered.

He becomes less & less able to take up any serious considerations & I feel that it is now time to bring this engagement to a close as I am sure is his desire2. When I wrote last July3 in answer to your kind letter to him4, in which you proposed to postpone for a while sending in his resignation to the Board of Trade, I felt that we had left it in your hands & therefore I now take the liberty of writing to you again to ask you to have the kindness to forward his wishes.

This acknowledgement has been delayed owing to some difficulty arising from Mr. Faraday being unable to sign his name and I feared we might have to trespass[s] on your kindness in the matter, but all has been arranged satisfactorily.

I know not whether I am right in acknowledging the receipt of the money to you but trust you will excuse me in addressing you as a friend to my dear husband & believe me my dear Sir

Yours very sincerely | S. Faraday

T.H. Farrer Esqre | &c &c &c

That is 16 March 1867.
See note 2, letter 4580.
