Thomas Henry Farrer to Faraday   c.30 July 18661

Private

[Board of Trade embossed heading]

My dear Sir:

I answered yr. note2 a little hastily the other day to the effect that yr. resignation shd. be laid before the President of the Board of Trade.

But since writing to you it has occurred to me that it wd. perhaps scarcely be desirable to come to any conclusion in the matter whilst Tyndall is away in Switzerland - I know that it gave him very great pleasure to undertake to do any thing for yourself and I feel sure that he wd. be grieved that the arrangement we made, which was perfectly satisfactory was as well as to him, should be put an end to after so short a time and during his absence.

To say the truth, as far as he is concerned, I believe it wd. be much better for him that yr. resignation shd. be delayed a little - at any rate till he comes back.

Will you therefore allow me to keep back your note for the present. I shall be truly glad if you can on reconsideration give me this permission.

Believe me | sincerely yours | (signed) T.H. Farrer

Professor Faraday | Hampton Court.
