Melbourne 18th June 1873.

Sir,

In reply to your letter of the 15th inst1 I am directed by the Chief Secretary to state that up to the 30th inst you are an officer of the Department of the Honble the Commissioner of Lands and Survey, and to remind you that there are still certain letters addressed to you by Mr Casey that require to be answered. Mr Francis trusts that you will do this without delay and bring all departmental matters to a close before the end of the present month, after which the Government will be glad to comply with your request for 12 months leave of absence. The Botanical Library and Museum also will be taken over, thus leaving you to take absolute rest and recreation without any duty being entailed upon you
