Der beigefügte Brief von Miss Hussey für Sie, venerabler Freund, kam zu mir ohne eignes Couvert, eingeschlossen in ein Schreiben für mich, welches ich auch hinzufüge, u woraus Sie ersehen werden, welch eine prächtige junge Person Sie ist.

Sie hat inter alia auch eben eine ausserordentlich kleine Form von unserem europ. (hier eingewanderten) Plantago Coronopus, eine Art welche ich aus der Nähe der Nordsee u des baltischen Meeres von 1839-1846 lebend kenne, die aber im dortigen Clima einen unterbrochenen Entwicklungs Gang hat, also nicht diese Winterform oder Frühlingsform von unglaublicher Kleinheit und doch einiger Fruchtbarkeit nicht hervor zu bringen vermag wie in einem winterlosen Klima; für eine volle Auffassung des Species-Begriffs muss man innerhalb der Wende Kreise lange beobachtet haben. So können z. B.¹ in der winterlosen Zone Cardamine, Epilobium u manche andern Genera hier nicht nach denselben Prinzipien für wirklich[e] Arten-Definitionen behandelt werden, wie bei Ihnen, wie ich aus Feld Erfahrungen aus Dänemark u Deutschland weiss

Ich werde über das kleine Wunderding Plantago, welches Miss Hussey eben fand, u welches in anderen Gattungen der Landpflanzen manches Analoges hat, einen kurzen Aufsatz liefern hier demnächst.

Hoffentlich sind Ihnen die vielen Algen Sendungen von mir oder durch mich in Ihrer Winterbehausung alle richtig zugegangen. Würden Sie mir freundlich bald schreiben, was angelangt ist, so dass ich die manchen Amateure über die richtige Ankunft beruhigen kann. Das Herbeischaffen von so schönen u so umfangsvollem Material macht wohl viel mehr Mühe und Umsicht u Beharrlichkeit meinerseits, als Sie vielleicht denken. Dazu kommt nun auch noch, dass ich das Interesse der Sammler durch Zuschriften und Geschenke wach zu halten suche. Die Sammler haben ja auch selbst Ausgaben.

Ich sehe mit Erwartung auch einiger ermuthigenden vorläufiger Auskunft über den Inhalt der Sammlungen entgegen. Während der Winterstille werden Sie gewiss manches Merkwürdige darüber daraus entwickeln

Ich habe Miss Hussey nicht persönlich kennen gelernt. Ich glaube sie ist nur taub, durch Krankheit oder einen Sturz in ihrer Kindheit; sie ist also nicht stumm, wie ich früher hörte.

The enclosed letter from Miss Hussey for you,² venerable friend, came to me without its own envelope, enclosed in a letter for me, which I also enclose,³ and from which you will gather what a splendid young person she is.

She has inter alia also even [included]⁴ an extraordinarily small form of our European (introduced here) Plantago coronopus, a species which I know living from the neighbourhood of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea from 1839-1846, but which in the climate there has an interrupted development, therefore not⁵ this winter or spring form of unbelievable smallness and yet of some fertility is not capable of bearing as in a winterless climate; for a full conception of the species concept one has to have observed for a long time within the Tropic. So for example in the winterless zone Cardamine, Epilobium and many other genera here cannot be dealt with according to the same principle for true species definition like at your place, as I know from field experience from Denmark and Germany.

I will produce a short essay here soon on the small marvellous Plantago that Miss Hussey just found and which has many analogues in other genera of land plants.⁶

I hope that the many dispatches of algae from me or through me have reached you in your winter dwelling all correctly. Would you kindly write to me soon what has arrived so that I can reassure the many amateurs about their safe arrival. The gathering of such beautiful and such extensive material requires probably much more trouble and prudence and persistance on my part, than you perhaps think. On top of that now I try to keep the interest of the collectors alive through letters and presents. The collectors also indeed have expenses themselves.

I look forward with expectation to somewhat encouraging preliminary information about the contents of the collections. During the winter quietness you will undoubtedly develop from them many noteworthy things about them.

I am not acquainted with Miss Hussey personally. I believe she is deaf through illness or a blow in her childhood, she is thus not dumb, as I heard previously.

I suppose you are kindly continuing the distribution of the Algae Muellerianae. If you happen to have some remaining, would you also send a small packet to my old friends Colmeiro in Madrid and Henriques in Coimbra?

Miss Hussey has from me my Key to the system of Victorian Plants⁷ (descriptive) with many detailed wood engravings.
