11th May [188]7
Dear Sir,
Baron von Mueller and the Committee of Management are sending Mr William Bauerlen for a three months' collecting tour in the far north-west of this colony, — a part, strange to say, which hitherto has never been trodden by the foot of a botanistl. A return ticket to Bourke will be provided for him, and thence we are anxious for him to push rapidly on. We are anxious to obtain introductions to squatters & others, who will doubtless help him both with carriage of himself and collections and also with food. Knowing the interest that you have in all kinds of exploring work, and understanding that you have correspondents in the far north-west, I have taken upon myself to request that you will kindly aid in this truly national work by furnishing me with the names of a few squatters with whom it might be desirable to communicate.1
Yours truly,
J. H. Maiden
