June 5 [July 1870]1

My dear Wallace

As imitation & protection are y[ou]r subjects I have thought that you w[oul]d like to possess the enclosed curious drawing.2 The note tells all I know about it.

yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin [signature]

[2]3 P.S

I read not long ago a German article on the colour of female birds, & the author leaned rather strongly to your side about nidification.4 I forget who the author was, but he seemed to know a good deal.—

C.D [signature]

A pencil annotation at the upper right-hand corner of page 1 adds '?1881 [1870?]'. The correct month and year of July 1870 has been established by the Darwin Correspondence Project see DCP-LETT-7218. Darwin evidently wrote 'June' by mistake.
The enclosed drawing and note have been located, however ARW indicates receiving the drawing in his letter addressed to Darwin on 6 July 1870. See WCP1935.4087.
A pencil annotation at the top of page 2 adds "June 5".
The German article remains unidentified.
