Has received cheque for five guineas from Epping Forest & County of Essex Naturalists Field Club. About his letter on "Nationalisation of the Land" in the Daily News. Criticism of Nelson, who received £500 p.a. on top of his salary, plus £2000-£3000 expressly for his services re. Epping Forest. Views on Transvaal. "It is simply abominable that we should at the present day actually take away freedom from a people of European race who claim and defend it and have always done so!"
Will proof-read his preface to Weismann’s Studien.
Making arrangements to see Meldola.
Requests name of the publishers of RM’s translation of Weismann’s Studien.
Apologises for the trouble he has caused RM. Encloses letter [13280] which has been returned to CD [by August Dupré, to whom CD had sent it in error].
Sending paper on "species and Genera" from Nineteenth Century. Will stay at Meldola's before travelling to B. Ass. meeting at York.
Will not stay with Meldola, but invites him to Godalming for the weekend instead. Wants his advice about gas stoves.
Shall be glad to see Meldola on Monday afternoon. Has a friend staying so can't offer him a bed. The Varleys called but I don't know if they saw anything. The Corporation of Godalming have to sue the Gas Company humbly to "enlighten their darkness"! The Swann lamps would go out and where they did not go out gave far less light than gas lamps!.
Wishes to borrow Weismann’s pamphlet on the Daphnidae [ "Ueber die Schmuckfarben der Daphnoiden", Zeitschrift für wissenschaftliche Zoologie 30 (Supp.)]. Is preparing an essay on "alternation of generations".
CD happy to lend Weismann’s pamphlet to RM.
Is coming to town for a meeting of the Land Nationalisation Society. Could he have a bed on Tuesday night?.
Encloses proof of CD’s prefatory notice for RM’s translation of Weismann; hopes CD might enlarge upon it.
Regrets he can add no more to his preface for Weismann’s Studies. Offers donation to aid with publishing expenses.
Thinks RM’s preface is excellent.
Declines CD’s generous offer of assistance with publishing costs of Weismann’s Studies, but would welcome his help in getting elected to the Royal Society.
Agrees to propose RM for the Royal Society.
Thanks for agreeing to propose him for the Royal Society.

RM’s application to the Royal Society.
Has examination papers from 20 May to about 6 June. Your article on [Epping Forest] in Nature was far too mild. I trust that in Contemp., it will be hotter and stronger.
