Their cousin William Daniel has sent his "picturesque book on animals".
Following receipt of letter from their mutual friend [Charles] Lyell concerned to hear that [John] Mackay [(1772-1802), nurseryman and gardener] has been credited in "English botany" as sending the 'Saxifraga pedatifida', which he claims is impossible as it is very rare and only found in the Clova mountains; offers to send plants botanists are not well acquainted with so as to be cultivated in gardens.
Encloses specimens of 3 varities of 'S. pedatifida'; an 'Arenaria' he proposes naming 'A. charlinfolia', observations. Points out that Smith has credited [Robert] Brown with finding 'Sagina maritima' in 1798 on coasts of Ireland and Fifeshire, when he himself found it in 1784 on Ben Nevis.

"Nothing more flattering" to the Linnean Society than being permitted to enrol the Prince Regent [George IV (1762-1830)] as an Honorary Member. Accepted his own invitation to become an Honoary Member from respect he bears the Society and for feeling it did not imply the slightest degree of botanical knowledge; considers Fellowship in a different point of view.
Speculates that JH may one day rival Isaac Newton. Awaits JH's visit next Tuesday. JH's parents ordered chairs to be ready [Wednesday], when PW's sister will accompany JH to Slough.
Pleased at account of her mother's recovery. Has not seen his cousin [Richard] Westall's [(1765-1836), painter] illustrations of [Walter] Scott's [(1771-1832), author] works yet. [Richard] Salisbury has been "thrusting himself forward" to talk with himself and [William Jackson] Hooker at Sir Joseph Banks'; Banks gave Salisbury a "rough rub" about changing plant names.
Received £66 16s for his lectures and expenses. Account of his journey to Westhorp [Kindersley home, Smith's cousins] and description of the setting and house; Sir George Nugent [(1757-1849), army officer] visited yesterday.
