About Romanes. Has sent review of Cope's new book to Nature, also review of Archdall Reid's The Present Evolution of Man.
About his collection of moths. Poulton wants to know where they went. About the organisation of his collection, Romanes and Darwin. Wants to give his copy of Cope's Origin of the Fittest to Linnean or Zoological Society.
Higgins succeeded Stevens. More about where ARW's collection went. Round labels are ARW's. Moe about Cope book - would prefer it to go to Linnean.
Hewitson resetting butterflies and removing the tickets. ARW's private collection would only have had round tickets used for the locality.
Comments on Poulton's proofs. Individual variations. Beginning exam papers. Has sent "Utility of Specific Characters" paper to Linnean to be read 18 June, probably his last paper and appearance at a scientific society, so will try to get up to read it and hear the discussion.
ARW will not make a speech in Darwin's honour at Oxford. Hooker should do this, as he is Darwin's oldest surviving friend. ARW believes that Darwin would not have wanted a statue of himself. Would be better to found institution or professorship for research.
Thanking him for his volume on Darwin. Has received circular from Galton about suggested Royal Society Biological Farm.
Arrangements for the Meldola's visit. Is writing an article on the utility of all specific characteristics, and has also reviewed Cope's book for Nature.
Glad that he had nothing to do with the mimicry book. Will be giving a paper at the Linnean on "The Utility of all Specific Characteristics." Views on Essex Forest.
About Linnean meeting. Description of "woad" from Chamber's Encyclopaedia.
His sister died two years ago. Her husband, Thomas Sims, who was a photographer with a small business, has been sold up for rent, and is in danger of starvation or the workhouse. Does Meldola know of a post such as photographer to a scientific man or institution which would be suitable for Sims?.
